UWA Calls for Collective Effort in Chimpanzee Conservation
Uganda Worldlife Authority (UWA) has called upon the people of Muhorro Town Council and Kagadi District, in general, to combine efforts in conserving chimpanzees. This happened on 23rd December, 2022 at Muhorro Town Council Local Government Community Hall during a council session.
Representing UWA, Sergeant Amanyire said that chimpanzees are both a threat and an opportunity to the host communities.
The chimpanzee are a threat to children when disturbed. Let us allow the community, technical staff, politicians and community-based organizations to play their role.
Said Amanyire
Amanyire added that in the short run the chimpanzees can be transformed into tourist attractions. He however said that this requires intensive community sensitization, mapping, and habituation.
We also need to motivate private forest owners who have willingly given out their forests to be used as a home for chimpanzees.
Amanyire Added
He brought to the attention of honorable members that the long-term solution of conserving chimpanzees is to migrate them to another secure game park or game reserve, which takes more than 15 years for it to be effected.
He, therefore, called upon honorable members to sensitize the community to coexist with chimpanzees as they are a great source of income to the community and to the government.
